Default Domain Names & Keywords

An issue that can be debated for hours but would love an opinion on a keyword rich domain.

Lets say we wish to sell Black Widgets. Now:

Widgets.com etc are taken
Blackwidgets.com etc are taken
buycheapblackwidgets.com. is available

Now not focusing on the actual domain name or keyword value, is there any significant problem in using such a long url?

It is the length of the name, the number of characters that concerns me.

Appreciate opinions

So you think the long one of buycheapblackwidgets is too long?

Please be assured that i dont intent to use the words buycheap....this is merely the first thing i thought that looked long enough.

Another example could be:

tonydidahulahoopjump.com

Its the length im thinking of, can you clarify your opinion?

Many thanks

Snooks,

The length of the domain is not so important from a search engines point of view as long as it has the keywords embedded in the domain.

But from a visitors point of view it has to be memorable, so the shorter the name the better.

I guess it partly depends on whether you are just building a site that you want people to find on the search engines, or you are planning to do more and build a business.

Choosing domains was always one of the things people asked us about in the days long ago when we did web development for other people. This is what I told them then
Choosing a domain name and I think it's still fairly valid.

I'm not convinced that it makes a big difference to your ranking but assuming you do get ranked, you should consider how people will react to it. Keyword stuffed domains can look dodgy. Also the longer they are the more likely you'll get some unfortunate/amusing effects. Always take a step back and try to think how you'd react if you saw any given domain for the first time - domains like massagetherapist-com-au (in use) and www-expertsexchange-com (parked) - which may work for or against you.

Whenever I am putting together a new site I try to use the keyword tool from google to identify keyword combinations to use in the domain name

When buying in a saturated market I have had success adding "little words" to keywords, so
theblackwidget.com (doesn't work so well for this example, but can sometimes)
ablackwidget.com
myblackwidget.com

the old standbys of eblackwidget and iblackwidget can also work

I really don't think if it really matters, what matters most is to have a domain name that sounds so interesting and just like Armand said

He is right, the simpler the better.
example for this are:
Quote:
ablackwidget.com,
myblackwidget.com,
getblackwidgets.com,
blackwidgetsonline.com
There are many simple things, just don't make it complicated so that visitors can remember it easily.
