Depends what you're doing.

White hat SEO does take a lot of time and dedication.
If you're willing to just do some quick rush jobs to cash in for about a week, then let it die, Black hat stuff is fairly easy if you get your head around it and get the right programs.

Things like link injection, cookie stuffing, google bombing, etc.

SEO is easy, its the fact to do it great takes hundreds of hours... In many ways paying for advertising is cheaper alternative and you can see results straight away.

It completely depends on the competition in the market but these days most are oversaturated.

If you keep trying it will pay off in the end, especially if you make sure the content is fresh and useful and you don't damage your sites rep with bad links and black hate seo!

Not true - if 'SEO were easy', then everybody would have near perfect SEO, and after that the only thing to weight the rankings of sites would be the content itself.

I find the hardest thing with SEO is getting the backlinks. No one wants to swap links these days and it takes forever to build quality backlinks. Now I'm talking about an etail store, blog link building is easier as bloggers tend to be more open to linking and sharing content and traffic.

I agree with Jam, there are better ways (and quicker ways) to drive traffic through other advertising channels.

I think the theory behind seo is easy, It is not hard to get a site to the first page of google using sites like digg etc, the hard part is staying there!!!

First page IS possible for anyone but it is a real matter of working hard at it every day, so many people don't bother and use other techniques to drive traffic, there's no right or wrong answer it always depends on the site and the niche, well that's my opinion anyway

I was surprised how easy it was to get ranked on the first page of Google for a keyword phase I was targeting just by doing some good on-page optimisation.

Getting your internal linking structure right, working on title tags and meta descriptions can often fix problems ranking for keyword phrases (depending on their competitiveness) especially if your site is currently is not optimised.

A lot of open source software like wordpress, phpmydirectory etc are not SEO optimised out of the box. You usually have to install mods to get them to be friendly to the engines.

Here’s a resource that I use: http://www.seobook.com/ (not an affiliate link) you’ll find lots of tools and resources – some free and some you’ll have to pay for.

I don’t claim to be an SEO expert but I’d be happy to do a quick review of someone’s site to give a practical example of some quick on page optimisation you can do.

Maybe we could start a group conversation and help someone out.

It's not easy, but its not difficult to apply common sense white hat SEO techniques to your site.

Oh, and I think if you re-read Harvey's comment above you'll see that he was actually suggesting you can get good traffic if you are prepared to take a "churn and burn" approach. Exactly what you said, using different language.
