| | what are the most important activities for getting traffic / improving google pageran Over the last couple of years I've read alot of tips - often conflicting - on these subjects and think it would be great for those in the know to summarise them here for us novices. Besides optimizing individual pages for keywords, eg. including in meta title, using a few times in first paragraph, I'm trying these...
- Google adwords (so fiddly, may need to have an expert do it for me)
- posting certain page urls with text on facebook
- posting certain page urls with text on twitter
- commenting in forums with url in signature (occasionally when I have time)
- submitting to free directories with reasonable PR
- some reciprocal linking with pages that have same or higher PR as mine
- blogging on wordpress and using hyperlinks to certain pages in my website
(do any of these stand out as a waste of time / or are certain methods far more worth the time/effort than others?)
Thanks, Leisa |

Thanks, Leisa | Fair enough (except you forgot to add your signature to this forum).
Is that the same site you first asked about some time ago? Your current site is really, really nice but I do not recognise it.
You can survive without links - we get link exchange requests every day and never reply to any of them.
There are just too many factors in play to rationally obsess about this stuff. Links and page-to-page comparisons are just part of the picture. (and I think minor at that).
In one of your other posts you mentioned hitting #2 without even trying. Maybe that is the lesson for the day. Focus on navigation and delivering quality information built to xhtml standards. Strive for excellence in that and the SEO takes care of itself.
It's all we do, trust me.

| | Thanks for that, it is the same site but with a new look - I've tried to make it more functional for visitors rather than concentrating on the look of it (ie. I have to remember it's a website, not a printed brochure) |

| | I'd also make the comment that links ARE important, if your strategy is to rank high in the search engines. In fact, once you've optimised your site it's pretty much all you need to worry about for search engine ranking. But by links I mean from all sources, including the ones you've listed. If you've got any original articles too, you can also submit them to article directories, who allow you to have a link back to your site on the article.
But if your strategy doesn't involve high search engine ranking, then don't bother with link building. Links on their own won't normally bring in a lot of traffic themselves, but will definitely help ranking.
cheers

I have one site under development where I had to put something on quickly because the domain has found its way to no 1 on google even though there is not a single link to it. I don't even know how google found it. |

| | Time Factor All the above factors is all good, but from my experience the older the site the stronger relationship you have with Google. Which is probably smart way, I have built over time a following, community and it is constantly updated with real information and content.
I have a site with less than 20 links but been around for at least 5 years now consistently makes me 25-60 dollars a day and continue to grow. The funny thing is i have 0 PR. So PR really doesnt mean anything if you do it right.

| | I think you are overlooking the potential of Forum Marketing. By posting useful information and joining in on conversations while having your URL in the signature you can gain massive traffic.
Blogging; when done right, can provide excellent traffic. (read my article here on Blogging).
Last but not least, I'd say Video Marketing. I believe Video Marketing is the way of the future; which is now, in regards to the Internet and Internet Marketing. If you think about it almost everything today is done in video, from following instructions on setting up an account to watching Youtube, or talking to your friends on Skype. Video Marketing is often overlooked by many Internet Marketers because they are overwhelmed by the "complex technology". The reality is that their fear can be an advantage, thus making this a low competition and hardly tapped resource for traffic. Knowing how to do Video Marketing takes practice, but when mastered can convert sales faster than anything on this list. |
