Default Good luck with that plan.

Papers can survive digital age: News CEO - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

"Newspapers can adjust to the digital age, adapt their business models and continue to reach mass audiences. What it will take is a complete rethink of the very essence of what is news."

That's what John Hartigan thinks.

I think any affiliate with a hosting account and access to a news feed is standing on the same starting line without the handicaps that previously used to exist and none of the baggage that shackles the mastheads.

News Ltd boss Hartigan: Sites like Crikey and Mumbrella are less than 10% original - mUmBRELLA

Oh, and yes, it got Tim a bit riled - Mumbrella isn’t the cause of your problem, Mr Hartigan - mUmBRELLA

i have a 20 yr old who i dont think has ever read a newspaper and a 17 yr old that only reads the footy section on the weekend

when i was their age, i read both main newspapers front to back daily

not so sure that means the digital mediums will have much more success, as i dont believe the younger generation in general give a crap about news of the world anyway, based on my kids, which i would consider typical of their group

cheers

I really liked this from Seth Godin's blog a few days ago.

If you don't want to read the whole post then this is a good bite:

"Magazines and newspapers were perfect businesses for a moment of time, but they wouldn't have worked in 1784, and they're not going to work very soon in the future either.

We're always going to need writers, but the business model of their platform is going to change."

Sums it up pretty well I think.

For the Australian market, I call BS at least for another couple of years.
Why? Because our WiFi coverage sucks and has SFA places where it's free, and our wireless data plans are a joke... And people still want something to read on their morning commute. Newspapers are too large, so they turn to their ipods.

The problem is that the magazines simply aren't value adding to their content. Instead, they're going backwards and becoming more ad filled than ever, so they come across as very poor value for entertainment spend.
You know which magazine market segment still continues to perform well? Video Gaming mags, because they come with a disc that's got a heap of value added content.

Music magazines should be doing the same thing. How much does it cost to whack on a CD choc full of Mp3s? Hell, update it, and use a 128mb SD cards. They'll be as cheap as CDs nowadays, and people can even reuse them to swap the free music, and maybe even music making apps, they get.
Same with anything that's related to a hobby. It's got material in that hobby that can be digitised and added to a cover disc.
Not something that's media consumption friendly? Tutorial DVD on the cover. Knitting! Pearl 1 stitch 2! Gardening! Rig up a handy dripolater using $4 of hose, a bucket, and some wooden stakes. etc.

quality digital readers and downloadable content at a price/subscription with easy upload via bluetooth point etc is the way I see it going.

Maybe ecash will re-emerge - dang that was a beautiful system!!

generally people who want news. I don't think the idea would fly for those who do not want it.

Newspapers have left it too late to save themselves... Which is a pity, really.
It would have been so easy for them to push down the cost of the technology by absorbing the cost of the devices with the subscriptions and sending them out to everyone. The costs would have been made back by harvesting the market data you'd get from knowing exactly who is clicking on which ads and reading which stories.
There'd also be the ability to charge for premium news streams, like the stories that are filed but not printed, on top of the regular subscription fee.

It's the ultimate double dip.
Charge people $300 a year for the newspaper, then charge advertisers for sending their ads specifically to the people that are actually likely to pay attention to them, and then run affiliate marketing based stuff on the side... And then offer to sell people premium devices that are smaller and lighter as well

The first media conglomerate that actually tweaks to this idea will actually be the one that survives.

I'm waiting for the Apple tablet to come out - bundled with e-newspapers.
I've seen what my other half's iphone has as an interface and it is beuuuuutiful!
IMHO, a larger screen would be something to make it worth sitting on the verandah on a sunday morning checking my stats ^h^h^h reading the newspaper - and no black fingers!
