Thanks for that Armand, its good info. As you saw my thread today concerning what traps there might be in registering domain names, you could have put this as a post in response to that - but no matter, I appreciate your help.

Could you tell me if there is a domain registration company you would most trust? Im looking for peoples experiences here as I am really new in understanding the possible traps.

Jen

I have been with Melbourneit.com.au for nearly three years now and I have been quite impressed with their customer service, hosting and technical support if required.

Mind you, they are not the cheapest, but as they say, "You Get What You Paid For" They are a very professional team.

Thanks.

Actually a friend told me of that company (well I think they did as they said something similar and couldnt quite remember the full name) and also seemed happy. I looked up what I thought they alluded to and indeed it did look expensive. Now though, being more cautious about who I use, it may be a safer bet so I will look back into it. Thankyou.

Thanks

Jen

Great article Armand - a lot of useful information there.

I agree with Melbourne IT - they are a great firm.

Another good one I use is Planet Domain who have given me great service over the years.

Over the years I have primarily used Netregistry, TPP Internet and Hostess (the budget arm of Netregistry).

I mainly use Hostess now as I don't really need phone support for domain names and their .com.au domains are only $20.95. But if you want phone support then Netregistry or TPP are very good. I've never had a concern with either.

Tanooki,

Just as an added point, Net Registry bought Planet Domain a couple of years back. Indeed they are also a professional outfit.

Not sure how many domains anyone here buys but you can also get a resellers account through these guys if you like :-)

Hope this helps.

I think NR also bought MD Web Hosting and definitely has a stake in NetFleet too - the premium domain auction site. They've been very active in the market.

Hostess are great if you're just buying the domains. After all, it's rarely the domain that the issue is with.
Just point their DNS entries to wherever you're getting hosted.
Generally, I get US based hosting. Cheaper, and often faster, unless I'm only after local traffic.

It's a pity Robyn's not here anymore. I recommended her to a friend who said she was an absolute pleasure to deal with.

Have you had any problems with GoDaddy?

Nicely written and very informative. I will be considering those things in the future.

I run a couple of sites with Robyn before she left the forum and she put me onto Mynethost Business Hosting PHP MySQL Joomla Hosting Fantastico RV Sitebuilder Australian cPanel Hosting who has been top notch! As for registering Domains I use a Planet Domain reseller and have not had a problem, fairly cheap too.

If you're thinking of registering a heap of domains, perhaps think about joining Planet Domain as a reseller, that way you'll get the domains at wholesale cost. (or any other domain seller for that matter)

One thing to remember is that you don't always need to buy new domain names. I regularly scan a number of sites whom provide great tools for examining freshly expired domains etc (which is great when you want a site that has been registered for a long time... domain age does help significantily in the SERP's providing nothing untowards has happened on the domain).

Links to my favorite sites on domain names can be found here (T4GG.com)

Speaking of Robyn, does anyone know how I can get in touch with her, she registered 5 or 6 domains for me and now I can no longer get into her site to access the domain info.

She provided a reasonable and friendly service, but to be honest, I seriously have to question her integrity shutting down her business without having the decency to notify her clients, very unimpressed.

Have learnt my lesson though, now I only use NR or Intaserve.
