Well I started in 2004 with a website
http://www.bokaap.co.za, a place I lived in and worked in as a tour guide in South Africa. By chance I found an affilliate 'thing', I placed an affiliate link from
http://www.safarinow.com for accommodation bookings, I had no web experience, still have much, I had no idea about
SEO, just knew I wanted a website. I placed meta tags and got some free advertising in the main city newspaper through an editorial, being a female who launched a website, inspiring other women to go into IT.
In time Europeans who visited Bo Kaap, looked at the website through Google, prior to visiting the area, then added the site as links to their site or made reference in various travel websites. I made about US$15 month in commissions within a month of launch, not much but it was something. Later I placed a few google ads as described by google 'heat maps' and can say I cannot give up that website. Looking back I was so ignorant, yet lucky.
Keeping with my passions in life of travel, tourism and helping others, as well as help from the forum thus far, I am soon launching
http://www.ozarrivals.com. I know travel is not what people are doing, but immigration and those looking to migrate to Australia is bigger than I expected.
Good Luck to everyone out there, there's opportunity for everyone.

oh, I still remember my first cheque from google wondering if my bank would accept that it was vaild???
