| | Creating my own website :-* I want to start a small business and create my own website. As far as using a computer is concerned, I can do the usual - e-mails, surfing, Word etc, but I have no idea how to create a website. I'd be grateful if anyone could give me a few pointers of where to start and what pitfalls to watch out for. Also, those of you are familiar with this stuff, what do you think my chances of success are? Thanks! Building My Own Website |

| | Well, there are a lot of options out there - and lots to learn...
Of course, just as an aside, my signature block does offer a little assistance... |

| | i am on the same position as you, i picked up a course and the young guy taught me quite well. It's called g sniper btw. I used to learn from fiddling around with blogger sites but they are too hard to navigate! Wordpress much easier and faster to create fully functional websites! |

| | Ok, in all seriousness, if you don't know how to do this... then don't.
Pay someone else a couple of hundred bucks to do it for you, and make sure you've got something like 3 months of trouble shooting in the contract too.
Installing Wordpress is pretty easy if you follow the instructions, but it gets hard to moment you want to add functionality and you don't know what you're doing, which you clearly don't.
I don't mean for this to come across as offensive or anything, but a smart business person will outsource what they don't already know as it saves time and money. |

HarveyJ did you notice (as Im sure everyone else has) that the OP was actually doing an advert for the website they are promoting which explains how to create a website, as was Paul next and Randyq after that. - all of whom obviously know how to create a website.
Further to that how unwise of you to advocate people just outsource "what they dont already know" re the creation of their websites. While such an approach suits some it disadvantages others who will be wishing to be involved in the creation of their website, understand the processes and dont actually have money straight up for anyone else to do it. If you wish to offer people advice make it reasonable and rational not a splurt of HarveyJ arrogance.

| | You can try using an online website builder which comes with most hosting plans. My 10 year old daughter recently created a website using RVSitebuilder (Jumba Hosting). You can select an existing template and go through all the relevant steps to build your site and publish directly to the live hosting server.
Also, very easy to create a newsletter sign up, guest book and a contact us page.
The site is Star Books |

| | Moldy: Hardly... The OP asked how to make a website for their business, and explained they knew computational basics.
My recommendation was not to make one if they didn't already know how to make a website, and to outsource that.
The obvious idea is that they either teach themselves on a non commercial site, or get someone to build the commercial site.
It's like me saying "I drive my car a lot, and know how to use it really well... can someone tell me how to build an engine I can put in it?"
All the well meaning platitudes of other mechanic enthusiasts and instructions in the world won't prevent the first engine I make being something that probably isn't going to work as intended. |

Thanks!/QUOTE] Tips on Getting Started: Find a website hosting company that offers free templates as part of their services. This will help you to get started with a website that looks decent and that is easy to maintain. Many website hosts are now providing free website templates but always read all that they offer because there are still some that don't offer the free templates.
Tips for Success: Think about what type of small business that you want to create. I have some information that about starting up small businesses. You can read about it here. OnlineMoneyHut.com Your level of success will mainly depend on the type of business that you are starting. Some businesses work better offline and others do much better online. Knowing where your small business idea fits will give you a better idea of where you need to focus the majority of your efforts. If your small business idea is best suited for the online environment then you'll should have a really good chance of being successful because you'll have a much larger customer base to choose from. |

| | I was going to suggest blogging software like Wordpress or b2business(??). Both a free and lots of people seem to use them to generate websites. I thought it would be difficult until I started and just read about how to do it, but it is actually quite easy if you're willing to have just basics.
Always even consider things such as Squidoo lenses?? |
